The Group is going from strength to strength recently with new members. Firstly we have Andy Knight from Greenfellers Ecological Arborists ( http://greenfellers.co.uk/ ) who have already got a good reputation in FBG for providing a very reasonably priced service for the removal of unwanted trees and stumps and the general maintenance of trees.

Also we have been joined by Colin Harding from Action Coach, a business coach. Colin recently gave an excellent presentation on what sort of people create new businesses and where the general progression towards independence and business success can take them.

Other business people met in recent months include Carl Sykes from Sykes Safety Solutions (http://www.sykessafetysolutions.co.uk/) who is looking to provide sensible advice to business on health and safety. We have also been visited by Sue Garrett from SGMR Market Research, who specializes in particular in market research in the food sector. FBG has also been visited by Rob Osborne from Choosemycare.com, a company looking to provide care solutions (http://choosemycare.com/).

So a very busy time for FBG in all our business networking activity and looking forward to more in the future!

We had a really busy Guests' meeting recently and am very pleased to welcome Paul Wise from Utility Warehouse into the Group. Kevin Briscoe of Briscoe PR can provide training courses in public relations.

Malcolm Dent of MDDM said he had been very busy recently with nativity videos and transferring them onto DVD.

Bob Pitman of Global Webtrader said he had been very busy recently with websites and applications for the web.

Peter Moore of Forever Living wants to hear from people who want to work in their own way, to their own hours.

Tariq Mian of Towergate Insurance stressed the importance of insurance in risk management.

Theresa Lawrie-Ashton from I Can Achieve is holding a Crazy Goals workshop on 28th January and is also looking for contacts with colleges.

5th Tuesday Tweetup - big success!

Last night I attended the last Tuesday tweetup for 2009 at Dockgate 4 in Southampton hosted as ever by the wonderful @tuesdaytweetup. It was perhaps the most successful and well attended too date,which bodes very well for future events.

I was pleased to meet a number of new (to me) people at the event, including local twitter celebrity @CatStormont who was selling cook books for her Brownies (of course I was seduced by her very natural, almost undetectable selling technique and purchased a copy), @stewzer @fradgepick @ejjyjo (the last two being a lovely couple who were a delight to meet) @barrysampson @MikeyPalmer @clarebeckingham and @iBoov -phew! The tweetups are a great way to meet people. You normally already have a connection through the wonderful world of twitter, which makes the introductions and getting to know each other much easier than the usual cold start of a conversation with a stranger.

It was lovely to see familiar chums @Sandanista @doclorraine @freshtherapies @icicle_halo_ and of course @tuesdaytweetup herself! @tuesdaytweetup has, through her efforts, given a lot of people a lot of new contacts and hopefully new friends, a wonderful result for something she regards as a social experiment. There are so many business and social opportunities at the tweetups and its always exciting being there.

4Networking at the Spinnaker

I went to a very enjoyable network meeting with the 4Networking group at the Spinnaker Hotel in Swanwick (like us they seem to think its a great venue too). The group made me feel very welcome. Everyone got the chance to give a short presentation about their business followed by more networking. Then there were three chances to get to know someone a bit more in detail.

I was very pleased to meet Jordan Williams from In Communication Ltd ( http://www.4networking.biz/members/view.htm?UserID=33477 ) whose company's website is at : http://www.incommuk.com/ . His company provides web conferencing and Microsoft live conferencing.

I also had the pleasure of meeting of Tony Knight from Knightsure Insurance who is particularly interested in insurance for the haulage business. Knightsure's website is at : http://www.knightsure.co.uk/ .

Andy Blissett runs his own painting and decorating company AB Painters and Decorators and he tends to deal with domestic properties although he wants to make links with letting agencies to increase his work.

I also had the pleasure of seeing Chris Hatch from Zedoary (http://zedoary.net ) who I know from @tuesdaytweetup as @ChrisHatch.

Another interesting business at the group was Low Ryders Advertising ( http://lowrydersadvertising.com ) which looked like an interesting way to advertise your business.

Beneficial Business Networking

Last Thursday I went along to a networking meeting at the Fleming Park Leisure Centre in Eastleigh for a meeting of the Beneficial Business Networking group, run by the wonderful Maddy Law of Wooden Tiger ( www.woodentiger.co.uk ).

There was a good turn out and a tasty breakfast served. Everyone had a chance to give a brief presentation of their business, followed by a more in depth chat with other people in the group. I was very pleased to chat to Nicola Dickinson of Fresh Therapies. Her business provides organic based therapies ( www.freshtherapies.co.uk ) and she was clearly very passionate about the products and services Fresh Therapies can provide.

I also met Christine Etheridge who was promoting her business selling glasses to people directly without growing through an optician. As a spectacle wearer, this seemed particularly interesting to me. The website for her business is at http://www.focus-on-you.net/.

It was a great meeting and it looks the group will do well with Maddy's boundless enthusiasm.

The wonderful Ms Tweetup had managed to invite an interesting cross section of people and it was good to catch up with people met there previously and to make new contacts.

Tuesday Tweetup – Success!

Your trusty correspondent attended at a wonderful networking event on the golden spring evening of Tuesday 31 March 2009 at the Dockgate 4 Piano Bar in Southampton. This was the Tuesday Tweetup – an event inspired and drawn from the online networking virtual world of twitter.

I was grabbed by my good friend Kevin Briscoe from Briscoe PR (http://www.briscoepr.com/) as I had mistakenly hung around in the normal bar area. The tweetup was in the very smart piano bar downstairs and it was already busy when I got there. Kevin and I have discussed twitter and online business promotion before and I must admit he is very knowledgeable about the subject.

We met the engaging Alex Bainbridge of Travel UCD ( http://www.tourcms.com/ ) who had a number of exciting ideas about how to tweet successfully to grow your followers. I was very pleased to meet James Clark of YRC Logistics ( http://www2.yrclogistics.com/ ) and we discussed the relative merits of trying to make money using twitter and what twitter’s long term plans might be.

I also got a chance to chat with Christopher Gutteridge of eprints ( http://www.eprints.org/ )and Chris Dodd of Funky Spunk Media ( http://www.funkyspunk.co.uk/ ). He and his comrade Rory Jackson were conducting interviews with attendees and yours truly, very shyly of course, gave forth and hopes that the beer I managed to spill down my jacket doesn’t show up too much in the film!

Later it was time to chat with the lovely tuesday tweetup ( http://www.tuesdaytweetup.com/ )herself, an old school, college and uni friend of mine named Lisa Woodall. Thanks to her hard work and the sense of excitement she had created, the evening had been a wonderful success with a chance to bring some of the energy and chaotic creativity of twitter out into the real world.

Paul Clift from Working Telecoms gave a very interesting presentation on the work his company does in provide telephony services. He stressed they were keen to provide practical, honest advice to match a client’s requirements. The focus of his presentation was how a telephone network might build up in a company and used this to illustrate how flexible it could be. For instance, a system can have voicemail added to it and also the ability to have informative pop ups about a caller appear on your PC’s monitor when someone calls. The PC will recognise their number and can pop up information about the caller for you when the phone rings. He also discussed adding homeworkers to a network as well.

Tariq Mian from Towergate Insurance

Tariq Mian from Towergate Insurance gave a very interesting talk on his work in the insurance world. In particular he mentioned liability insurance and public liability and went onto discuss professional indemnity insurance. He used the example of an archaeologist, called into certify that an area of land for development was free from historical buildings and artefacts, only to later discover that, for whatever reason, this was wrong and a big development had to be put on hold at great cost as a result.

He also discussed policies to personally protect directors and for risk management. A great talk, especially as apparently he made it up off the cuff!

Breakfast Network Group Play Santa!

No, they are not all dressing up in red robes and white beards (although knowing this group they would!) however, they are giving away a sack-full of presents because breakfast networking group FBG has chosen Southampton General Hospital as the recipient for their 2007 Christmas charity donation. As such they have bought £500 worth of toys for those children in the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) who will not be able to go home for Christmas this year. The hospital was nominated by FBG member Grant of the Honest Builder UK Ltd, whose son spent some time in the Paediatric Unit some years ago “When your child is seriously ill it’s a really frightening time for parents and its a real relief to find yourselves in the safe and expert hands of the PICU” Charity donations are part of FBG’s constitution - says Chairman Malcolm Dent “this is a lively and successful business group and we make a conscious effort to put something back into the local area. Sometimes this takes the form of sponsoring individual members for their chosen charity activities but we also like to respond to appeals that may come direct to us”.

Devin Smith - Devin, a visitor to the meeting, is a managment consultant setting up his own business.

Alex Cousins - Alex runs a photography business specializing in children and pets.

Malcolm Dent - MDDM is for digital video for duplication and video for the Net.

Grant from Honest Builders UK Ltd gave a great presentation about the business he runs with Tim. He talked about the services his company provides for windows, doors, conservatories, kitchens, barn conversions, lead patterning on windows and so forth.

One further point - Mary Newman said she is looking for an umberella manufacturer!
